Description[]

In making 1983's RZV500R, Yamaha took a compact 250cc class chassis and fitted it with a two-stroke V4 engine similar to the one in the OW20 YZR500. Yamaha had previously proven the superiority of the two-stroke engine with the highly successful RZ250 and RZ250R, and the bike maker sought to further solidify its reputation as a builder of two-stroke bikes with the RZV500R, which represented the pinnacle of Yamaha's two-stroke technology at the time. The one spec that proved its performance more than anything else was its 4.4 lb per hp power-to-weight ratio—which approached that of racing-spec bikes of the day. With specs like that, the RZV500R was the flagship of Yamaha's two-stroke bikes.

This racing-modified RZV500R features a full array of modifications, primarily designed for weight reduction.

All bodywork is made of carbon fibre. The stock fuel tank was replaced with an aluminium model of the same size and shape, and lightweight racing expansion chambers are installed. These changes reduce the bike's weight significantly.

The engine is standard but with polished cylinder heads and machined ports. The carburettors are also standard but with modified jetting, and the stock reed valves were replaced with ones made of a higher-spec material. The result is high power that's surprisingly easy to control. To handle the extra power, a high-performance shock absorber kit was installed in the rear, and the settings of the front standard suspension were changed.
