"An all-purpose hot hatch as an alternative to the chunkier Golf."
Volkswagen had created a sensation with the first generation Golf GTI, but after a few model changes, the GTI became more and more expensive and lost its allure to younger buyers. To fill this void, Volkswagen introduced the GTI trim level to the third-generation Polo in 1995.
With a compact body similar to the first-gen Golf, the Polo GTI came equipped with a 1.6-liter twincam inline-4 that produced 123 BHP. Gear selection was performed via 5-speed manual transmission. Although its roots were that of an economy car, the Polo GTI featured high-quality interior trim. It featured a simple-yet-sporty hatchback body with compact dimensions, making it ideal for around-the-town commuting.
The car also possessed excellent handling. Its FF (Front engine, Front drive) chassis was wound tight, with a taut suspension system and sharp steering response.
In 2005, the fourth-generation Polo had a 1.8-liter inline-4-powered engine under its hood. It cranked out 148 BHP, making it decidedly quicker than the previous model. This powerplant was used in the fourth-gen Golf GTI as well as in Audi sedans. The sad fact was that the Polo GTI appeared for only a few years because soon thereafter, the 3-door Lupo carried the GTI flag, making some people nostalgic of the days of the Polo GTI.
