The Toyota Corona Exiv[1] 200GT follows several trends established by some of Japan's most outstanding sports cars. For starters, it's got a very long name. Secondly, it is more stealthy than a year's output from the American military's Skunk Works. The existing Corona model was introduced back in October 1993. At first acquaintances it appears to be an utterly understated, rather uninteresting saloon. Read on. What you actually get is all the best bits of the highly entertaining, well-loved Toyota Celica sports coupe, albeit disguised in the sort of apparel your bearded uncle would find most enticing. Sitting at the top of the Corona Exiv[1] range is the 200GT, the most nimble model of the lot. The model's mild-mannered exterior even benefits from a few crafty aerodynamic aids, while this car's Celica-derived suspension set-up utilises compact, lightweight MacPherson strut suspension at both the front and rear. Anti-roll bars cut down on excessive body movement during hard cornering. Braking, meanwhile, is provided by sturdy ventilated discs at the front and solid discs at the rear, matched to an anti-lock system to maximise all-weather stopping power. Just like the bulk of Celica models, the Corona Exiv[1] 200GT feeds its power through the front wheels. There's plenty for the beefy low-profile tyres to attempt to cope with, power being produced by a rorty two-cylinder, 16-valve engine. The peak power output is a generous 180 BHP. With this lightweight engine matched to the Celica's finely honed chassis, the 200GT is set up to be an incredibly easy car to hustle along quickly in. No wonder the model's popularity is guaranteed in Japan, yet because the 200GT has been mainly restricted by Toyota to its country of origin, markets as diverse as the UK to the USA have missed out on one of the Far East's more subtle yet capable sports saloons.
