Before the Lancer Evolution came to the North American market, the Eclipse waved Mitsubishi's sports-car flag to U.S. enthusiasts.
The first-generation model appeared in 1989 utilizing the powertrain of the Galant. It came in several trim levels, from a naturally-aspirated FF (Front-engine, Front-wheel Drive) version to an all-wheel-drive turbocharged rocket. The second generation Eclipse became more of a boutique vehicle, available only in front-wheel-drive and naturally-aspirated engine choices.
The fourth-generation Eclipse made its debut at the 2005 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and took the popular theme of the third-gen model characterized by a slick futuristic design and smooth-revving inline-4 and V-6, to another level.
While the car's 179.7 inches overall length and 72.2 inches width are the norm in the 2+2 coupe segment, excellent packaging accounted for spacious rear seats and luggage space. The interior was spiced up by a two-tone color scheme used on the dashboard and seats to give the car a more flamboyant character.
Supplying the power were two excellent engines, a 2.4-liter inline-4 with MIVEC (Mitsubishi's variable valve timing system) and a torquey 3.8-liter V-6. Both power plants came mated to the choice of a 4-speed automatic and 5-speed manual gearbox. The V-6 was the engine of choice, putting out 263 HP and 260.3 ft-lb of torque. It allowed the Eclipse GT to run to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds, making it as fast as pure sports cars costing thousands of dollars more.
