The Toyota Aristo was sold as the Lexus GS300 in the U.S.
By the time the second generation Aristo made its appearance in 1997, the car had become one of the most popular FRs (Front engine/Rear drive) in Japan. This time around however, Toyota opted not to employ the services of Giugiaro and his design firm Italdesign, and style the car on its own.
Toyota went with the same powerplants as the previous model. The engine of choice was the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 that produced 276 HP and 332.7 ft-lb of torque. The naturally aspirated variant came with 227 HP and 224.2 ft-lb of torque. Both versions featured Toyota's innovative valve timing technology, VVT-i. For the U.S., Toyota maximized the Aristo's potential by equipping it with a 4.0-liter DOHC V-8 (UZ series) that produced 292 HP and 309.5 ft-lb of torque. This V-8 got a bump in displacement in 2001 to 4.3 liters, changing its designation from GS 400 to GS 430.
Shifting was done via a 4-speed automatic transmission, but in July 2000, Toyota incorporated a smooth-shifting 5-speed auto. Also, the car boasted new technology, including VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control). While the new Aristo retained the cornering prowess of the original, it displayed an ever better ride quality, thanks in part to a longer wheelbase of 110.2 inches. In August 2005, the Lexus brand arrived in Japan, the car became known all over the world as the GS.
