"Massive and gorgeous in both driving and looks, the GT-R of the SUV world."
At the start of the new Millennium, Nissan designers were on a mission, to create aggressive, original-looking vehicles that emphasized "sport" over anything else. This included SUVs as evidenced by the FX45 Concept presented at the January 2001 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The radical styling and shape of the crossover vehicle was greeted warmly, and the following year, it went on sale at Infiniti dealerships across the U.S.
Nicknamed the "Bionic Cheetah" by company designers, the FX45 was a sports car in SUV clothing. The "45" of its name designated engine size, meaning under its hood sat a 4.5-liter DOHC V-8 that pumped out 340 HP and 332.7 ft-lb of torque to all four wheels. A milder version, the FX35, with Nissan's trusty VQ35DE (3.5-liter DOHC V-6) was also sold.
On the road, the FX45 hardly behaved like an SUV, with amazing acceleration and sharp handling response. Ride quality was harsh, but providing comfort wasn't what this thing was about. It was more about going fast and getting noticed. The FX's low-slung body featured a menacing face, highlighted by slim rectangular headlights. Large 20-in. alloy wheels provided additional bling to what was already a stylish ride. Inside there was plenty of space for five adults, but the luggage compartment was a bit tighter than other comparably-sized models.
