Hyundai has been releasing a series of concept cars known as HCD series for a while now, and the 6th instalment in the series, the HCD6, was shown at the Chicago Auto Show in 2001.
The HCD6 is a boldly-styled 2-seat roadster. At a length of 159.0 inches and a width of 68.8 inches, the body size is similar to the Mazda Roadster But in contrast to the Roadster, the HDC6's exterior styling is quite provocative. Both the front and rear ends look like wide gaping mouths that have been plugged up with giant bumpers. The bumpers themselves are float-mounted to look as if they are simply floating inside the openings.
The large headlights have reflectors with a glassy crystalline quality to them, and the front mask details are repeated in almost the same shapes in the rear, giving the car a similar design in the front and back.
The engine in the HCG6 is the same 2.7L DOHC V6 found in other Hyundai models like the Tiburon, but the power of the engine has been boosted considerably, and now reaches 215 BHP. The engine is mounted transversely amidship, behind the seats, and powers the rear wheels. The transmission is a 6-speed manual.
While the interior says concept, the controls and displays are simple and carefully designed to allow the driver to concentrate on the road. The overall design is held together by a motif of roundedness, right down to the single giant round dial.
Being a reasonably-priced roadster that younger drivers can afford, it is one concept car that will make you want to take it out for a spin if it shows up on the market.
