Inheriting its styling and spiritual character from the S model sports cars from the 1960s (S500, S600, and S800), the Honda S2000, which made its debut in 1999, represented the quintessential sports car; one that was lightweight, a convertible, and equipped with a Formula 1-inspired VTEC engine.
This rev-happy 2.0-liter inline-4, codenamed the F20C, produced 247 HP at a screaming 8300 rpm and 160.5 ft-lb of torque at 7500. The engine was mounted aft of the front wheels (in front mid-engine configuration) to improve front/rear weight distribution, which in the S2000's case was a perfect 50/50. Mated to the power plant was perhaps the best manual gearbox in the industry, a very precise 6-speed manual (no automatic transmission was offered).
In October 2003, Honda made a number of minor changes to the S2000, which included redesigning the front and rear bumper and lights, updating the interior, and adding 17 in. wheels. Two years later, in November 2005, Honda decided to really spice things up by increasing the displacement of the F22C engine to 2.2 liters. As a result, the S2000 produced more torque (162.7 ft-lb between 6500 and 7500 rpm), while horsepower peaked at a slightly lower 7800 rpm.
The redline was lowered from 9000 rpm to 8000, and an electronically-controlled drive by wire mechanism was also added. These changes improved the car's overall drivability, a welcome development to those who didn't take their machine to the race track.
Unfortunately, Honda discontinued the S2000 in June 2009, joining Honda's other "S" sports cars as true Japanese classics that are no longer available.
