In the 1960s, when F1 started, even though Honda was closely tied to City and Civic-based one-make races and motorsports in Japan, it didn't make a sport model of the 1960s S series for the market. Instead, Honda made an FF sport model based on the Civic in July 1983. This was the Ballade Sports CR-X.
This car had the name Ballade Sports because it came out of the Honda sales channel Verno Coupe, thus not adopting the Civic Sports name. Yet, the engine initially had the basic components that were the pride of the Civic. The body was a compact 3-door hatchback. It was so cramped inside that there was room for only one adult in the rear seat, sitting practically sideways.
The taste of the design was the same as the 3rd generation Civic. The only common item from the Ballade was the 1/2 semi-retractable lights. Its short length body had a beautiful smooth body line, which ended with a strong tail end. At the time it was first sold, the engine was 1.3L and 1.5L straight-4 SOHC. Its power of 108 BHP/13.8 kgfm didn't astound anyone, but the 815kg aerodynamic body and newly developed suspension gave it breathtaking manoeuvrability. The AE86 1.6L twin cams could keep up the chase. In 1984, the 1.6L DOHC 16-valvehead ZC model engine was put in the higher-ranking new Si. The aspiration to be a sport unit putting out 133 BHP/15.5 kgfm, extremely high power for that time, raised the CR-X's rating even higher.
