In-game description[]

This description is taken from the PAL version of Gran Turismo 2:

In 1989 Lotus brought back the famous Elan from the dead. The new M100 model stayed true to its forebear by wearing a lightweight sleek glass-fibre body over a steel backbone chassis, but the Elan M100 broke new ground in terms of its technical sophistication. The M100 was the first - and only - front-wheel-drive Lotus and, in many eyes, was the best-handling front-drive car ever built. The key lay with the innovative "Interactive Wishbone" front suspension, which suppressed noise and still gave excellent steering feedback and phenomenal grip. At the rear the Elan used independent suspension unit. Power-assisted steering, big ten-inch disk brakes and a slick-shifting five-speed manual gearbox all added to the confident feeling the Elan gave its driver. The engine was a 1.6-litre four-cylinder 16-valve unit supplied by Isuzu in normally aspirated or turbo form for the SE. In unblown trim this motor provided the Elan with 130 BHP and a pretty racy pace, but few people were interested in the non-turbo model. With a blower the power went up to a whopping 165 BHP, allowing it to crack 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds and top out at 140 mph. Production of the Elan S1 finished after just three years, the Elan S2 emerged for a limited run of 800 cars bringing the total number of Elans on the road to just over 4,500, before the production line ended in 1995.

Trivia[]

  • The car depicted in Gran Turismo 2 is actually an Elan '90. The Elan S2 only entered production in 1994, with a 155 BHP turbocharged engine.
  • The in-game description itself states "...few people were interested in the non-turbo model...", yet for whatever reason Polyphony did not include the more popular turbocharged version of the Elan.
