"This car set the fastest production car lap on the Nürburgring of 7 minutes, 22.1 seconds."
It was at the 2002 North American International Auto Show in Detroit when Dodge unveiled the ultimate American sports car, one that would rival even the daunting Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. The car was called the Viper ACR, "ACR" standing for "American Club Racer".
The ACR shared the same V-10 of the base car, the SRT10, which pumped out an astounding 600 HP and a mind-boggling 559.8 ft-lb of torque, but Dodge engineers saw room for improvement. They reduced the friction to the internal components inside the engine, as well as redesigned the intake and exhaust systems, making the power plant more responsive and rev smoother. Also, they reshaped much of the Viper's body panels, and added a giant adjustable rear wing to significantly increase downforce and keep the rear end stable.
Other aero enhancements were new front lip spoilers and canards. Measures to reduce weight were also undertaken, such as eliminating fog lights, utilizing lightweight wheels, and reducing the mass of various suspension components; which, by the way, was a full-adjustable racing spec system. The result was a car that weighed about 18 kg less than the base model. There was also a "Hardcore Package" that reduced weight by a further 18 kg.
With Tom Coronel at the wheel, the Viper ACR produced a lap time of 7 minutes 22.1 seconds at the Nürburgring in August 2008, setting the fastest lap time ever for a production car, four seconds faster than that of the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 in June 2008.
