The Dodge Neon, released in 1994 as a subcompact whose biggest draw was its reasonable price tag (less than $10,000 for the base model), was quite well received, particularly in the United States. After its debut, many variations were introduced, but the most powerful sports model in the line-up was the SRT-4, released in 2003. Like the SRT variants of the Viper and Ram, the SRT badge indicated that it had been worked on by Chrysler's high-performance car development division and was therefore a genuine high-performance vehicle.
The engine was a turbocharged 2.4L DOHC straight-4 that put out 212 BHP. The basic mechanical components were unchanged from the base Neon, but the transmission, suspension and braking systems were specially tuned to accommodate the extra power. The car also sported 17-inch alloy wheels.
While these specs may not seem particularly extreme, the actual performance of the SRT-4 clearly exceeded that of the rest of its class. The 0-60mph time was less than 6 seconds and the car ran the 1/4 mile from a standing start in 14.2 seconds. Numbers like these were way above and beyond those for the under 2500cc class front-wheel-drives. Actual measured top speed was a surprising 148 mph (238 km/h).
The Neon SRT-4, as the most powerful of the so-called sport-compacts, was squarely in competition with Japanese cars in the American market. At the same time, the car was also the strongest in its class in venues such as the new sport-compact class in NHRA drag racing, and in SCCA showroom stock car racing as well.
