"The 2nd generation S4, with a V8 engine equivalent to the upper-grade model S6."
The second-generation Audi S4 made its appearance after undergoing a full model change in 2002. What's most signifcant about the renewed S4 was what sat under the hood. Whereas the previous model had a twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter DOHC V-6 doing the work, Audi decided to up the ante in the new version by installing a 4.2-liter V-8, the same basic powerplant that powered its bigger brother, the S6. In order to make it fit into the S4's engine bay, Audi had to redesign main sections of the engine, making it more compact. The result is an all-aluminum monster that supplied 339 HP and 302.3 lb-ft of torque to all four tires, eclipsing the output of even the S6. And, for the first time ever, S4 drivers had the option to choose between a traditional 6-speed manual gearbox or a new 6-speed automatic. With the new engine came an increase in curb weight, but with a power-to-weight ratio of 0.21 HP/kg and an excellent rack-and-pinion steering system, the new S4 still maintained its sports car heritage and held true to the S emblem.
